An “army brat” who was born at the West Point Army Garrison in West Point, N.Y., Slater lived in Kansas, Texas and Illinois before moving to Fort Wayne at age 10. After graduating from R. Nelson Snider High School, she graduated from Indiana University in Indianapolis with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1985.
Slater has 30 years of nursing experience, including management and supervisory experience in the areas of telemetry, medical/surgical and home healthcare. She came to Lutheran Hospital in 2006 and was a registered nurse and later the clinical supervisor on the cardiac telemetry unit. In 2010, she joined the endocrinology department at LMG, working as an office nurse for the endocrinology providers. In 2014, she became a certified diabetes educator.
